The college soccer season is full steam ahead and local universities played games with both their men's and women's programs on Friday.
Washington Huskies
The UW women blanked Syracuse 4:0 at Husky Soccer Field on a hat trick by Kate Deines. Two of the three were penalty kicks. "We came together and we got it done," Deines told the school website. "It's rare to get two penalty kicks in one game. I just tried to calm myself down. My teammates did the hard part and I just put them in the back of the net."
The UW men lost a late heartbreaker 2:1 to Evansville down in Portland. The Aces' winning goal came in the 88th minute.
Seattle Pacific Falcons
The SPU Men had a stated goal of not enduring so many ties in 2010. Last year the Falcons tied over 1/3 of their matches. It will be a disappointing result then, as the club drew 0:0 last night at Interbay with Humboldt State. See video from coach Collings after the match, below.
The Falcon women continue their program's success. They shut out Humboldt State 3:0 at Interbay. “I definitely thought that our goals were of quality, some great finishes. Brandi Hamre, both of her shots were rockets,” Coach Chuck Sekyra said. “Nice to keep a clean slate and get a shutout.”
SeattleU Redhawks
TheRedhawks men play today against #5 Tulsa, but on the road in Eastern Washington yesterday the Redhawks women outlasted the EWU Eagles 2:1 in overtime. Freshman Ava Ames scored the overtime winner. "I'm really proud of the way we battled back and were able to come away with the overtime victory," said head coach Julie Woodward. "It was great to have Ava get her first career goal, and both her and Monique (Escalera) were great sparks for us and had great second halves."
