College offers course on how the Beatles changed the world

Richie Unterberger, author of "The Unreleased Beatles: Music and Film," will teach a six-week non-credit course on "The Beatles: The Rock Group That Shook the World" from June 21 to July 26 at the College of Marin's Kentfield campus, 835 College Ave., Kentfield, Calif.

The course will be an indepth overview of the history of the Beatles, Unterberger says, and will trace their artistic evolution from the beginning of their career to their breakup. According to a course description, it will look at the development of the styles they pioneered and mastered from their early days of Merseybeat to their later years through folk rock, hard rock, and psychedelia.

"The Beatles were among the most important agents of social change of the 20th Century, and the course will also examine their massive effect on the popular music and culture of their era," Unterberger says in a description of the course, which will feature both common and rare Beatles recordings and video clips.

The class will meet from 7-9 p.m. Tuesdays at Learning Resources Center 53. Course fee is $86. For more information and to register, visit the College of Marin Community Education website at www.marin.edu/CommunityEducation.

By the way, Unterberger's book on unreleased Beatles tracks is quite comprehensive and a great resource. It's 388 pages cover the years from 1960-1970. It also has a section on Lennon-McCartney songs not recorded by the Beatles and a short history of the Beatles' bootleg recordings.
