College of Charleston delivers southern hospitality

Shuttered windows, verandas, brick pathways, and wrought iron gates provide a beautiful setting for a college campus.  The College of Charlesotn recently flew out thirteen West Coast college counselors to give them a taste of the historic virtures of South Carolina and a lot of southern hospitality.  The College hopes to rrecruit more students from California, Arizona, and Oregon.

The College of Chalrleston is a publically supported private college -- receiving some money from the State of South Carolina,   Their 10,000 undergraduate student population occupies a small gated campus in the historic district of Charleston, with dormitories and various campus offices scattered about the district.

Unique to College of Charleston is its location on the Gulf Coast and hosting one of the top marine biology centers in the country.  While they have no football team, their Patriots Point athletic facilties has new soccer fields, baseball, and tennis facilities.  Their sailing team competes throughout the East Coast and is top-rated, using Charleston Harbor as its home base.  Sailing classes are open to all students on campus, and is a particularly popular course.

An extensive number of faculty-led study abroad programs are popular for students during their "Maymester" - when the entire of month of May is devoted to a single course taught in-depth.

A San Franciscan might fare well in a City that offers an abundance of restaurants, shopping, and water views.  During the counselor visit at the end of the winter season, students were seen wearing flip-flops and shorts to class.  For students looking for a college outside the snowy Eastern states, they might consider heading South for the winter.
