College football's opening weekend offers a few games worth paying attention to for fans of upsets on the football field. In fact, the almighty SEC has a handful of top contenders who should be cautious this weekend as the college football season gets underway.
Georgia (-2) @ Clemson
The Georgia Bulldogs are two point favorites on the road at Clemson. Clemson could be favorite in the ACC and has the weapons to go toe-to-toe with Georgia if they can overcome the size advantage in Georgia's favor in the trenches. Georgia's offensive line had nearly 400 extra pounds of force on their offensive line compared to Clemson's defensive line, and running back Todd Gurley packs some weight as well. But the Clemson combo of Tajh Boyd and Sammy Watkins could do some damage against a rebuilding Georgia defense and playing at home could be enough of an advantage in this star-studded season opening contest.
Florida (-23.5) vs. Toledo
The Florida Gators are my pick to come out of the SEC East this season, but they will do so after dodging a number of close calls this fall. One game that could easily become more of a threat than many suspect could be this weekend's home game against Toledo. The Rockets bring versatile David Fluellen to the field and have been known to convert some turnovers. If Florida struggles to find a rhythm, and past contests against MAC teams in home openers suggests they very well could, Toledo is not a team they will want lurking around on the scoreboard. The Gators are an overwhelming favorite in this one, but Toledo should be able to cover this spread and maybe even give Florida a late scare.
LSU (-6) vs. TCU (Arlington, Texas)
TCU looks to be a bit undermanned for this one, without Devonte Fields on the field due to a suspension for starters, but Gary Patterson and the Horned Frogs should still be capable of shining in the spotlight of Cowboys Stadium in a statement game. LSU is a solid team an six points may feel right in this one, but let;s see if TCU can come out strong close to home and play toe-to-toe with LSU and show what the Big 12 contender may be capable of.
