College football's most compelling games, week 15: Texas vs Baylor

According to Sportsline.com, Baylor is a 16 point favorite over Texas on Saturday.

A lot was at stake for Baylor during Friday’s Marathon MAC Championship game. With Jordan Lynch and Northern Illinois failing to live up to expectations on Friday night, Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty could find himself in New York for the Heisman ceremony. More importantly, Baylor could become an at-large BCS team with a win on Saturday.

Prior to game time, Bryce Petty announced that he would come back for his Senior season.

The Baylor Bears and Texas Longhorns could be playing for the Big 12 crown come Saturday afternoon. However, it all depends on what happens in the “Bedlam Series” between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

For Texas, this game could be the difference between another year with Mack Brown or Nick Saban moving on from Alabama to become a Longhorn. Still, Texas had a remarkable recovery from a dismal start to the 2013 season.

Although both teams got blitzed by Oklahoma State, they still have a chance at BCS glory.

When: Saturday, Dec. 7 3:30 p.m.
Where: Floyd Casey Stadium
TV: Fox

Texas

The Longhorns have been a different team since Case McCoy became full time starter at quarterback. Now he has to lead Texas to a wonderful offensive performance against Baylor. Texas has scored 30 or more in every win this season. In the three losses, the Longhorns have combined to score 59 points.

Defensively, Texas has been inconsistent throughout the season, but the staff changes have made a critical difference in the team’s fortunes. They’ll need one more performance to stop the magnificent Baylor offense. If they can tackle, Texas will stay in the game.

Baylor

This game will be about Lache Seastrunk. In their only loss, the Bears struggled without him, but he should be ready to roll in Waco. There’s no doubt that Baylor wants to turn this into a fast paced big play game. Bryce Petty can’t afford any mistakes to bring life to the Texas team.

The defense has not played to their capabilities in the past few weeks. They better hope the hangover from the Oklahoma State loss is over. Texas will put the onus on Baylor’s front seven to stop the run. Let’s see how they match up to the physicality.

The Verdict

Earlier in the season, everyone thought Texas was going to get beat down by Oklahoma. Texas showed the heart of a champion that day and brought the fight to the Sooners. This game has a similar feel with Texas as a 16 point underdog. In Baylor’s only loss, they scored 17 points. In every win, the Bears scored at least 35.

Baylor 42
Texas 31
