The Texas Longhorns come into Provo Utah as a 7 point favorite over the BYU Cougars on Saturday September 7. On Thursday, Texas displayed some mysterious breathing apparatus to help combat the high elevation when they battle BYU. According to ESPN.com, "BYU has dropped six straight games" vs top 25 opponents. Texas vs. BYU starts at 7 p.m. on ESPN2. A Texas win will merit strong consideration towards the Power Poll.
This is a tricky game for the Longhorns on Saturday night. After dismantling an overmatched New Mexico State despite a slow start, Texas will have their hands full with one of the toughest defenses in the country.
The Texas offense went crazy after a horrible start in week one. They scored 14 points in the first half and 42 in the second. It turned out to be a tremendous effort behind Ash’s four touchdown passes. However, BYU is a different animal to deal with on the road.
Despite losing to a game Virginia team, the Cougars gave up 223 yards total. They have the athletes and the scheme to frustrate Texas for long stretches on Saturday. Based on offensive production, BYU will need to force turnovers and capitalize off of Texas miscues.
Where BYU falls short is on the offensive end. Taysom Hill completed 13 passes in 40 attempts, and that is not going to get it done in any game. Now they face a Texas squad that can score. Hill has to play one of the best of his young career for BYU. The Cougars won’t be able to outscore Texas, so they must create running lanes to shorten the game.
The Verdict: This is the game that Texas needs as much as any game in recent years. It’s just hard to envision Texas scoring a bunch of points on BYU. Still, can BYU score enough to outlast Texas? Since they are at home, the crowd and the defense will lead BYU to an upset victory.
