After all is said and done, Jerry Palm of Sportsline.com, says that after Saturday’s results, the BCS will have 1. Florida State, 2. Auburn, and 3. Alabama in the final poll of the season. The BCS selection show starts at 9:00 p.m. on ESPN.
While the college football world wasn’t able to produce the heart stopping moments of last Saturday, championship weekend was very entertaining with upsets and offensive explosions. On Saturday, teams had to deal with the cold atmosphere in Texas and Oklahoma.
In Atlanta, the SEC proved that defense is overrated and offenses rule when you a solid plan. The numbers in this game were astronomical, and Auburn went from three wins to a SEC champion.
By the end of the night, there was only one college football team undefeated. The Florida State Seminoles won the ACC championship and now have the longest win streak in the nation.
Ohio State started slowly, then they came back to take a lead, but in the end, the Buckeyes lost their first game under Urban Meyer.
Missouri vs. Auburn SEC Championship
Auburn rushed into greatness on Saturday afternoon at the Georgia Dome. Quarterback Nick Marshall threw 11 passes and completed nine. Tre Masson had 304 yards rushing, to help the Auburn Tigers score 59 points. Still, the biggest play of the game may have been the Henry Josey run late in the third quarter. Josey was pushed five yards out of bounds and his back slammed into a cart. With a three point game entering the third quarter, Josey would have played a factor down the stretch. Instead, he spent a large majority of the fourth quarter on the sideline.
Florida State vs. Duke- ACC Championship
The Seminoles got off to a rough start in the first quarter against Duke. Part of it was the Duke defense. Florida State was under adversity, but they came through with flying colors again. However, by the second quarter, Florida State took over the game and it was evident that the Seminoles would be headed to the national championship. Jameis Winston finished with 330 yards passing and three touchdowns. He also had two interceptions and a highlight worthy touchdown run.
Ohio State vs. Michigan State- Big 10 Championship
No matter how many people want to refute it, the Spartans proved how legit their defense is. After getting out to a 17 point lead, Michigan State had to weather a 24 point storm by the Buckeyes that spanned the second and third quarter. Yet, there were no worries for Michigan State as they scored the final 17 points of the game to win 34-24. It was a game of runs. It’s too bad nobody thinks Michigan State should have an opportunity to run into the BCS title game.
Stanford vs. Arizona State- PAC 12 Championship
Sometimes teams don’t get better. Sometimes, the results are the results for a reason. Stanford proved that their dominating victory over Arizona State in September was no fluke. Two plays into the game, Tyler Gaffney scampered 69 yards to put Stanford up 7-0. The Cardinal never looked back from there. It’s evident that Stanford plays their best when they feel threatened. Stanford defeated Arizona State 44-14.
Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State- Big 12
The Cowboys were a win away from a Big 12 championship and a BCS bowl berth. Instead, they let a final drive by Blake Bell result in the game winning touchdown for Oklahoma. The Sooners played three quarterbacks in the game, used trick plays and did everything in their power to come away with the Bedlam victory. It looks like Oklahoma may fall into a BCS bowl.
Texas vs. Baylor - Big 12
With the loss by Oklahoma State, Baylor knew they were in the running for the Big 12 title. Texas was also primed to stake claim to the conference crown, and the first half was marred by good defense. The cold weather may have also had something to do with it, but the halftime score was 3-3. Then Baylor scored 17 points in the third quarter to take a commanding lead. After Texas’ lone touchdown, Baylor scored the final 10 points to win the Big 12 championship.
UCF vs. SMU- AAC
The Golden Knights played their coldest game ever on Saturday. With Louisville’s win over Cincinnati, UCF had nothing to play for. They already earned a BCS bowl game. Yet, the cold and a sluggish start, couldn’t stop Blake Bortles and company from grinding out a 17-13 victory. Now the Golden Knights finished the regular season with 11 wins.
Utah State vs. Fresno State- Mountain West Championship
Fresno State could have been downtrodden after their loss to San Jose State, but they got out to a good start defensively, and didn’t allow a touchdown until the fourth quarter. Derek Carr passed for 404 yards and three touchdowns against a game Utah State team.
