On Saturday, ESPN’s Lee Corso stated that the Big 10 championship game will be "decided by one play." For Ohio State, they would hope that the game would be easier than last week’s rivalry game with Michigan. However, there’s no doubt that the Spartans of Michigan State would relish their shot in a close game with the Buckeyes.
Ohio State vs. Michigan State
When: Saturday December 7, 8:00 p.m.
Where: Lucas Oil Stadium
Urban Meyer said that offensive lineman Marcus Hall will not start the game, but it’s likely that Hall will play. It’s not certain how long in game suspension will last, but everything could hinge on how well the offense is working without him.
Urban Meyer has not lost since joining the Buckeyes as head coach. His team is (24-0), and they are looking to earn that coveted BCS title shot.
Michigan State will not make it easy on the Buckeyes. The Spartans lead the nation in total defense. It will be special to see which team wins the battle of the trenches. Michigan State only gives up 64 yards per game on the ground. Ohio State has two of the best runners in college football. Braxton Miller and Carlos Hyde help the Buckeyes gain 321 yards per game rushing.
This should be a clash of the titans come Saturday night. Still, it may be the team with the better passing attack that wins. It’s not likely that Ohio State will abandon the running game, but the Buckeyes may have to take some shots down field.
If they hit a couple big plays, it will serve them well. Still, Ohio State must worry about the turnovers. Not only will Michigan State suffocate you defensively, they’ll take the ball away in a heartbeat.
Michigan State has been offensively challenged, but Connor Cook has steadied the ship. His touchdown to interception ratio has been excellent. Yet, Cook may have to play his best game ever.
Ohio State’s defense has been maligned for much of the season, but they have a tough run defense. It’s the passing game that sometimes causes the Buckeyes fits. Michigan St. certainly doesn’t have a prolific air attack, but they may tweak their game plan on Saturday.
Although it’s freezing in Indiana, the Big 10 championship will be played in doors in perfect conditions. This looks like a game that will have more scoring than last season. It will come down to the big plays from Ohio State’s running game. If they are able to manufacture offense, the Buckeyes will be headed to the BCS title game.
