The University of Kentucky hired Mark Stoops to replace Joker Phillips as head football coach on November 27th. And much has been made of the impact this might have on the recruiting trail. But so far there seems to be little evidence of it.
Rivals.com ranks teams in each conference based on the commitments they have received so far. This morning, Kentucky is listed dead last in the SEC with no 5-star recruits and just one 4-star recruit among their 17 commitments.
ESPN is a little more favorable as they show the Wildcats with two 4-star commitments. But Kentucky does not have a single player in ESPN's top-300.
By way of comparison, Vanderbilt has nine 4-star players committed and four in the ESPN top-300. And the Commodores are usually one of the weaker teams in the league. Alabama has 16 4-star commitments.
Stoops seems to have the fan base excited. But Kentucky won't be competitive on the field until it is competitive on the recruiting trail. And right now, there is no sign of that happening.
