The Associated Press named Auburn Tigers head coach Gus Malzahn their 2013 coach of the year. According to ESPN on Dec. 23, Malzahn received 33 first place votes to lead the way.

Auburn, who lost one game early in the season, roared back to end up in the national title game after a number of teams ahead of them suffered upset losses, including the Alabama Crimson Tide and Ohio State Buckeyes. Auburn beat the Missouri Tigers in the SEC Championship game to earn their spot in the national title game.

David Cutcliffe, who led the Duke Blue Devils to their best season ever, received 17 votes for second place. The coach of the team they will face, Jimbo Fisher of the undefeated Florida State Seminoles, received three votes to tie with the Michigan State Spartans Mark Dantonio.

When Malzahn took over as head coach of Auburn, the Tigers were coming off a 3-9 season in 2012. That was the Tigers worst season for the program since 1952. They didn't win one game in the SEC conference play either. They brought in Malzahn and Bo Jackson said that the new coach had to rebuild the program.

He exceeded all expectations. Auburn finished the season with a 12-1 record and they beat the Alabama Crimson Tide and Missouri Tigers to guarantee their spot in the national title game against Florida State. Gus Malzahn is now receiving his praise, but his journey isn't over with yet. The AP coach of the year has one more game to play.
