College basketball's NCAA tournament bracket projections: Villanova drops seed

Jerry Palm of CBS Sports released his updated NCAA tournament bracket projections on Friday. Plenty of teams had chances to cement their resume with nice wins, but a lot of them came up empty. There were games featuring two bubble teams, so it was abundantly clear that the conference tournaments would produce some huge losses on Thursday, but it was the upsets that have shaken the foundation of the new projections.

Wisconsin moves to a projected No.1 seed by Jerry Palm.

The Villanova Wildcats were slated to be the No.1 seed in the east, but they were shocked by Seton Hall with a buzzer beater. Now they look like a No.2 seed at best. The Wildcats were close to being run out of the building early in the second half, however, they made a nice comeback to take the lead. Still, their sluggish start put them in hole that they weren’t able to get out of.

SMU needed one win to secure their spot in the NCAA tournament. Instead of getting that victory, the Mustangs lost to Houston. Currently, SMU is projected as a No. 11 seed after dropping one seed line.

UCLA has seen their stock rise after beating Oregon with relative ease. They gave the Ducks their first loss after eight straight wins. The Bruins are now projected to be a No. 6 seed.

Doug McDermott scores 35 in Big East Tourney debut.

Pittsburgh also had a nice 29 point win over Wake Forest. Jerry Palm has the Panthers projected as No.10 seed. A win over North Carolina will be a shot in the arm for Pittsburgh.

Colorado beat California by three points and their seed line has risen to a No. 8. If they are able to get a semifinal win over Arizona in the PAC-12, expect the Buffalos to rise exponentially.

Another PAC-12 semifinalist, Stanford rose one spot to a No.9 seed. They face UCLA for a chance to play in the PAC-12 championship game.

Kansas State dropped one projected seed line to No. 9 after their loss to Iowa State. The Wildcats should be safely in the tournament come selection Sunday.

Seven Atlantic 10 teams are playing for seeds or attempting to get in the projected bracket. It will be interesting to see who wins between Richmond and VCU. Dayton and St. Joseph's also has a highly anticipated bracket busting match up.
