Jerry Palm of CBS Sports released his new NCAA tourney bracket projections and made a change at the top. After Tuesday’s loss to Georgia Tech, Syracuse dropped off the first seed line. The Orange were supposed to be a lock for a top seed, but a couple bad losses have put that in jeopardy.
No.1 Seeds: (Florida, Wichita State, Arizona, and Villanova) are now on the top line. The Wildcats moved up one spot, replacing Syracuse. Florida moved to (17-0) in the SEC. Wichita State is still awaiting their opponent in the quarter finals of the MVC tournament. Arizona faces the first of two games during their Oregon road trip.
No. 2 Seeds: (Syracuse, Michigan, Wisconsin, Kansas) come in as the projected elite eight teams. The Wolverines moved up one seed line after winning the Big 10. Wisconsin is the second Big 10 team, and they are joined by Kansas who won the Big 12. Syracuse dropped from the top line with one regular season game remaining.
No.3 Seeds: (Virginia, Cincinnati, San Diego State, Duke) The San Diego State Aztecs dropped one seed line, but they have a chance to rise again. They have two games left, including a home game against New Mexico. Virginia won the ACC regular season, so they could be in line for a No.1 seed by the end of the season. Duke is also in line to move from the third seed line. The Cincinnati Bearcats have the American Athletic Conference on the line.
No. 4 Seeds: (Oklahoma, Michigan State, Iowa State, Creighton) The currently project #4 seeds pack a lot of offensive punch. None of them are conference winners, but they’ll be looked at favorably to go deep in whatever region they’re selected in. Creighton has lost two games in a row and they dropped one seed line.
Providence would be playing California in the 11 seed first round game according to Jerry Palm. The winner would take on No.6 seed Louisville.
As a No.12 seed, Dayton could be playing at home in the first round. They are projected to play the Missouri Tigers. Still, both teams have plenty of work to do. There’s no time to lose any games and wait out the selection process.
The Kentucky Wildcats are projected to be a No. 6 seed. With one regular season game left, it’s possible that Kentucky has the opportunity to move up with a win.
The winner of the MAAC could be a highly entertaining team. Iona won the regular season, but they aren’t going to be an At-Large selection. Currently, the Gaels are projected to play Cincinnati as a No.14 seed.
Southern Miss is projected as a No. 12 seed to play against No.5 North Carolina. Even with 25 wins, the Golden Eagles are on the bubble, so they need at least a few more wins.
