College basketball rankings week 17: Gonzaga new No. 1

Welcome to the Examiner.com college basketball rankings, where Examiners from all over the nation vote for their Top 25 college basketball teams. Examiners sent in their weekly polls on March 4, ranking the Top 25 college basketball teams in the country.

Another number one team fell, as the Indiana Hoosiers lost once again. This allowed Gonzaga move into the number one spot in the polls for the first time. Gonzaga received 11 first place votes in this week's college basketball rankings, while both Duke and Indiana received one each. However, Kansas took the second spot in this week's poll, while Georgetown came in third. That left Duke and Indiana at numbers four and five.

Notre Dame fell from the Top 25 this week after losing to Marquette and Virginia Commonwealth moved back into the college basketball rankings at the 23rd spot.

The Big Ten took sole possession of the number one spot this week in the Top 25, with five teams. Notre Dame falling from the polls caused them to drop back into second place with four teams. The Big 12 remains in third place with three programs in the poll and VCU joins Saint Louis and Butler to also give the Atlantic 10 three teams as well. The SEC, Pac-12, and the ACC rank next, all tied with two teams each. Finally, the Mountain West, Western Athletic Conference, West Coast Conference, Atlantic 10 and Conference USA all have one team represented each.
