Applications for college admissions are reaching record levels. It could be another season of high rejection rates yet again and lost hopes for another batch of students. There is a time Harvard received a record number of 27, 278 applicants for its next freshman class, which was a 19% increase over the previous year. In the same group of campus reporting double-digit increases included Northwestern University (14%), University of Chicago (18%) Dartmouth (10%), and Amherst College (17%).
This trend could be as a result of demographics, ease of online applications, aggressive recruiting and applications in more than one college as a safety precaution. Population of 18 year-olds is swelling thus creating a high number of high school seniors graduating. Harvard, Princeton and University of Virginia have seen a rise in number of applicant. This came about as these Universities ended early admissions programs saying it benefited affluent students. Furthermore, these Universities were not able to make comparisons of financial aid offered at other various colleges.
The surge in application numbers showed the cancellation of early admission program did not hurt. Princeton college received a record number of 20, 118 applicants, a 6% increase. University of Virginia received 18,776 numbers of applicants, a 4% increase. Harvard once announced a sharp increase in financial aid for even families that earned up to $180,000. This spurred applications. The recruitment in elite colleges in new regions and among low- and middle-income students increases the number of applicants.
California is a tremendous source of applicants for Cornell University, which is an upstate New York University established in the West Coast regional office of Los Angeles some years ago. An associate provost at Cornell University, Doris Davis says ten years ago the state of California were not among their top eight feeder states. The University of Chicago once saw an increase in internal applicants grow by 23% to 1,826.
