Colin Cunningham: 'Falling Skies' bad boy with a heart of gold?

For a little while it seemed like John Pope (Colin Cunningham) was going to be the biggest foe for the 2nd Mass community in TNT’s Falling Skies. The rebellious, and somewhat mysterious, biker didn’t play by the rules Tom Mason (Noah Wyle) was enforcing for his own troops, and that posed an immediate threat to their new way of life. Suddenly we all had to come to terms with the fact that people are still people, and regardless of the other-worldly, or otherwise just external, opposition, not everyone was going to be able to put differences aside and band together. But in the grand scheme of things, Pope may end up being more of a help to this group than a hindrance…right?

We caught up with Cunningham at the Paley Center for Media’s panel celebrating the show, and he teased what’s to come for Pope for the rest of the season. You can see our video chat to the left.

Obviously Pope having skills in the kitchen might be reason enough to keep him around, but Cunningham teased that those skills are not just applicable when it comes to making oatmeal taste different everyday.

“Metaphorically, he’s really good with ingredients, and there’s a nice explosive outcome,” Cunningham said.

So does this mean he’s just a bad boy with a heart of gold, and the bike and the chains and the long hair is all just to fit some image? Co-star Drew Roy seems to think so, pointing out that he thinks “Pope still has a heart somewhere in there” but admitting he has a lot of proving to do first.

“I still wouldn’t trust Pope with my wallet,” Cunningham smiled, “but I think for some of the bigger issues, I think in a pinch, he’ll lean more toward helping.”

Falling Skies has already been picked up for a second season, so perhaps as the story evolves Pope and Mason may even have to team up and form an unlikely, and somewhat unorthodox, understanding. Cunningham shared that he will leave all of that up to the show’s brilliant writers but he is happy to go on any ride on which they want to take him. We personally think that would be an interesting way to go, though, especially considering all of the twists and tensions arising in the next few weeks. Any issue Mason may have with Pope has to seem so petty on the backdrop of everything else!

Falling Skies airs on TNT, Sunday nights at 10pm.
