Two prominent weather features were evident this morning on the weather map across the northeastern quadrant of the Nation.
- A cold front, reinforcing the cold airmass introduced to the Capital Region yesterday, was draped across the length of lake Ontario, northeastward to the coast of Maine.
- An area of low pressure resided over eastern Virginia, and was quickly heading toward the Atlantic coastline.
The combination of these two systems mentioned above will keep a chance for light snow and snow showers across the region this morning. As both systems move south and east of the region this afternoon, and high pressure over the center of the nation works eastward, skies should begin to brighten. Temperatures will be near to slightly below normal, with high temperatures forecast to be a good 20 to 30 degrees lower than they have been the past two days.
The weekend looks to start out decently weather-wise, with high pressure in control and mostly sunny skies expected on Saturday. Some light snow is possible to close out the weekend on Sunday as a storm gathers strength over the mid Atlantic coast. Right now, the bulk of the energy with the storm looks to stay well south and east of the region, keeping heavier precipitation confined further south and east.
Brisk and cold conditions look to open up the new work week as the storm forecast to develop on Sunday moves into the Canadian Maritime provinces and looks to intensify quite rapidly. This will help keep the surface winds quite vigorous over our region, along with some snow showers or flurries which may dot the landscape from time to time.

Today: Morning snow showers and flurries giving way to a mix of sun and clouds for the afternoon. Breezy and colder. High in the upper 20's. Northwest winds 10-20 MPH with some higher gusts to near 30 MPH possible at times. Chance of snow this morning is 30 percent. A dusting of additional snow accumulation is possible.
Tonight: Mostly clear and cold. Low 10-15. Light and variable winds.
Saturday: Mostly sunny. High in the mid 20's. West winds 5-15 MPH.
Saturday Night: Mostly clear to start with increasing clouds late at night. Low in the mid teens. Light southwest winds.
Sunday: Increasing clouds with a chance of light snow. High near 30. Light southeast winds. Chance of snow is 50 percent.
Monday: Partly sunny and breezy with a 30 percent chance of snow showers. High near 30 and low near 15.
Tuesday: Mostly sunny. High near 30 and low near 15.
Wednesday: Mostly cloudy with a 30 percent chance of light snow. High near 30 and low near 15.
