Cold and bitter winter in Harford County could be just the reason to vacation

Had enough of the snow and cold weather?  Tired of seeing the kids sitting on the couch or at the computer?  In Bel Air, Harford County Maryland there was 16+ inches of snow in the last wave of inclement weather.  Why not take a spur of the moment beach vacation?  No, not to Florida, Fiji or Ocean City, Maryland!  Take a beach vacation in your house right in Harford County!

If you have older children talk to them about what beach they would like to go to for your “vacation”.  Try to do some family research.  Investigate what the beach looks like.  What foods are associated with this beach?  Is there a type of music that is associated with this beach?  Investigate if there are any movies that took place at this beach.  Is there a National Geographic DVD that highlights this beach?

Maybe your family decides to visit a beach on your “vacation” where you have been before.  You could watch old movies you have made from previous trips.  If you have old photos you can even create a “movie” using a slide show program, set to beach type music.  Check out what supplies there may be at the Harford County Public Library, do they have any DVDs or books with beach images for inspiration.  Share the information with the family when you spring the “vacation” plans on them!

If you investigate recipes, create them together.  Gather those beach blankets from the back of the linen closet and put them on the floor and couch.  Get a broom to use as a limbo pole.  Get the beach music together.  Get everyone in the mood by increasing the heat in the house to a temperature where they can wear shorts and short sleeved shirts.  Find those flip flops from the back of everyone’s closet and put them on.  Go to the party store, like the Card Factory Outlet in Bel Air, and look for beach or tiki cups and plates.  You might even be able to find a blow up palm tree if you are really lucky!

Gather the family around the TV, set up the music or DVD.  Have beach party.  Eat, drink, play, celebrate and laugh.  Winter will end soon!  This might just be the reminder everyone needs to keep the faith and get through the rest of the long, cold and ugly winter.
