Stephen Colbert and "The Colbert Report" welcomed "Hobbit Week" on Monday, and with that, the faux Republican host addressed rumors of a cameo in one or more of the upcoming Tolkien trilogy.
This was his opening segment on Monday night. As the show opened, viewers could see that the part of the set dedicated to his interviews -- which will be dedicated to "Hobbit"-based celebrities this week -- has been turned into a version of Bag End.
He opened the segment with the Elvish phrase "Elen sila lumenn' omentielvo," which was translated on-screen to mean “A star shines upon the hour of our meeting.” As he said, "I'm just so pumped about the Hobbit movie, about that Hobbit, the Hobbit."
His guests this week, as Colbert teased, will be cast and crew of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," Sir Ian McKellan, Martin Freeman, Peter Jackson and Andy Serkis. Indeed, that's one a day for those who are not counting challenged, as Colbert does four shows weekly from Monday through Thursday.
It's known that Colbert made a visit to the set of "The Hobbit" earlier this year. What's unclear -- though rumored -- is if he had a cameo or not. As he said, media reports went from wondering if he would have a cameo to reporting he would have a cameo.
Colbert noted:
For your pleasure, we've got an even bigger Tolkien name lined up to host our Hobbit week: me. As Peter Jackson said of me in Entertainment Weekly, "I have never met a bigger Tolkien geek in my life."
Colbert wouldn't admit to whether or not he had that cameo, he said,
If I did not appear in the Hobbit trilogy, why do I have the Elvish blade Sting?
