Coke ad called racist: Arab-Americans protest Super Bowl ad [VIDEO]

A new Coke ad has been called racist by some Arab-American groups, as the commercial, which is set to air this Sunday during the Super Bowl, is accused of perpetuating negative stereotypes.

In the video, an Arab-American walks across the desert with his camel. Sweating and thirsty, he comes across a large Coca-Cola bottle before seeing images of cowboys, Vegas showgirls, and others racing against time to be the one to reach the bottle first.

But now, the ad (which you can watch below) is being called out for showing such a limited view of Arab-Americans. Instead of portraying the Arab on screen as a leader, businessman, or other character that breaks expectations, Coke is being accused of feeding into negative stereotypes of Muslims.

“Why is it that Arabs are always shown as either oil-rich sheiks, terrorists, or belly dancers?” said Warren David, president of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, according to a new Reuter’s article.

Ads on Super Bowl Sunday get scrutinized more than any other ads on television. Over the past few years, both Doritos and Pepsi have been accused of feeding into negative stereotypes of African Americans, as well.
