Some time after Matt's Fish Fry & Seafood Market closed for the day on Tuesday night, fire erupted, eventually engulfing and gutting the Cohoes building early this morning.

The popular restaurant was owned by the Sweeney family. Tom Sweeney said he, his wife and their four children all worked in the business, sometimes serving up to 700 meals a day during Lent.

It recently placed among the top three in Capital Region Living Magazine's "best fish fry" and "best seafood" categories.

Firefighters were called to the site of the one-story wood-frame building at 584 Saratoga Street in this Albany County riverside city at 4:17 this morning by a city police officer on patrol. Fire Chief Joseph Fahd said the fire appears to have started on the side of the building where the furnace and water heater were located.

While the structure was a total loss, no injuries were reported.
