It’s the end of an era, Angelenos. The Downtown LA coffee bar most aptly named CoffeeBar, the same one who raised the bar for a standard cup of coffee or latte, is closing its doors. Insert facepalm and uncontrollable crying here.
CoffeeBar reports that they lost 75 percent of their business when Starbucks opened across the street, so downtown Angelenos – you should be ashamed of yourselves. With brews from Verve, Handsome and Sightglass, it’s a wonder that anyone downtown could drink anything else. Is that overpriced garbage you get at Starbucks really worth letting a phenomenal mom-and-pop coffee shop go to waste? The regulars couldn’t keep CoffeeBar afloat singlehandedly, and the news is both ludicrous and upsetting.
The perfect “get away from the office” scene, CoffeeBar’s décor is simple and the environment is inviting. With so many newer coffee shops going for a similar look and feel, you’d have to assume CoffeeBar set the standard for Los Angeles coffee.
Sources suggest CoffeeBar will reopen as a restaurant and bar, but the inevitable disappointment in humanity might still leave us with a bitter taste in our mouths. The new restaurant might be fabulous, indeed, but it won’t be CoffeeBar. We can only hope they’ll continue their commitment to fresh food from local farmers.
Get to CoffeeBar before it’s too late. Hand your Starbucks gift card to a homeless man and opt for Spring For Coffee, Café Demitasse or Handsome Coffee Roasters for a downtown LA alternative.
