Coffee has been cleared of allegations of contributing to causing cancer and has shown promise in possibly preventing certain types due to the high concentration of polyphenols. Coffee has also been cleared of contributing to high blood pressure unless the consumer is also a smoker. It has been proven that coffee will not cause ulcers, but might aggravate existing ulcers. Pregnant and lactating women should avoid coffee and caffeine. And individuals who are prone to anxiety attacks should limit their coffee consumption as the caffeine can heighten their anxiety.
Studies have shown that two cups of coffee per day, one in the morning, and one in the evening provide the greatest health benefits and drinking more than 5 cups a day starts to eliminate these benefits. To combat jet lag westbound air travelers should drink 3 cups of black coffee early but those heading east should wait until evening.
