Coconut oil is great for many things and most of them don't include food. The health benefits of coconut oil are great but it's multi-use abilities are what make having a jar on hand a frugal household must. The 16 ounce jar pictured cost just $5.99 and can be used to replace a multitude of products.

For starters, coconut oil is a great daily health supplement. The list of health benefits related to eating this oil are pretty endless. That said, since coconut oil is solid at room temperature, it is still considered a saturated fat and according to health experts it should not be eaten freely. It can be used as a healthier substitute for butter, partially hydrogenated fats and animal fats.

Replacing butter with coconut oil when cooking is a great first step. It can be used in many dishes but be warned, foods will have a very mild coconut flavor. It's probably not too recognizable if you don't know it's in there but if you do know, then you will definitely taste it. Try making scrambled eggs with coconut oil instead of butter. That's a good start to see if it is a taste that you will enjoy.

Beyond using coconut oil in foods, there are many other uses. Among them, coconut oil makes for a great beauty treatment. It can be rubbed on cuticles and nail beds to reduce hang nails and promote nail growth. Coconut oil also makes a great hair moisturizing treatment. When rubbed into the scalp and roots of the hair, it is said to prevent hair loss and even to help regrow lost hair.

Coconut oil is also great for many skin conditions. In the winter when skin starts to get real dry and flake, a little bit of coconut oil goes a long way. It is great to rub on dry elbows and knees, as well as any dry patches you might have. It has also been said to help with psoriasis and eczema.

Coconut oil mixed with corn starch and baking soda makes for a wonderful, all-natural deodorant. Mix it with a bit of sugar or salt and you have an amazing exfoliating scrub. Coconut oil also makes for an all-natural personal lubricant and massage oil.

Even though a jar of coconut oil may seem pricey compared to other oils, you can see that it has many uses and a little truly goes a long way. Just with this short list of things you can replace with coconut oil, think of all the products you will not have to buy.
