Cochrane wraps up Worlds with silver medal

The 2011 World Aquatics Championships in Shaghai, China wrapped up today and the Canadian swim team came away with a final medal.

In the men's 1500 metre freestyle, Ryan Cochrane, the 2008 Olympic Summer Games' bronze medallist in the same discipline, won silver behind China's Sun Yang, who won the race in World Record time of 14:34:14.

Cochrane's time was 14:44.46. It was his second medal for Canada at the World Aquatics Championships. He won a silver in the men's 800 metre freestyle on Tuesday. But at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, only the 1500 metre freestyle, and not the 800 metre freestyle is contested by the men. Hungary's Gergo Kis won bronze in the men's 1500 metre freestyle with a time of 14:45.66.

Overall, it was Canada's seventh medal at the World Championships. Canadian athletes won four silver medals and three bronze medals, to finish eighth overall in the medal standings.

China had the most medals with 36, followed by the United States with 32 and Russia with 18.
