A Coca-Cola Bottling Company cap was extremely offensive, especially to the family that opened the beverage to read “You Retard.” Blake Loates of Edmonton in Alberta, Canada was so furious when he saw that cap that he wrote a letter to the Coca-Cola Company, according to Yahoo News on Sept. 19.
Loates sister suffers from cerebral palsy and autism and if she had opened the cap, this could have devastated the woman. The bottle cap came off a bottle of Vitaminwater, which is a Coca-Cola product.
Coke wrote back an apology letter and they also plan to post an apology on their website. They said in the letter that this was unintentionally done. It was part of a competition pairing one random English word with a random French word. They went on to say in French, “retard” means late or delayed.
The English connotation of the word was missed during the development process of creating these tops. The company offered their most sincere apologies to the Loates family, especially to Mr. Loates sister, Fiona.
The company will also be posting an apology on their Vitaminwater Canada Facebook page and sharing the apology through Twitter on both Vitaminwater and Coca-Cola pages.
