Mentors are leaders and coaches. A great coaching model called GROW was created in late 1970s by Alexander Graham (originator) and in 1980s it was further developed and promoted by Sir John Whitmore. It has been tailored and modified by many since then.

Many have taught, wrote, and utilized the GROW model to help in performance improvement, leadership development and goal achievement. Mentors can use the model to build relationship and promote ownership with mentees to meet specific goal. The following is a version of the GROW model:

Goals – The first step is to clearly identify the goal and write the goal down in a concise sentence. This serves as the foundation of the model. (make a list of the goals if there are more than one and tackle each one separately)

Reality – The second step is the problem-solving step. Information needs to be separated from opinion and fact to determine the core issue or the problem. Understanding and outlining how far you are away from the goal and being realistic about how to reach the goal (established in step one). (discuss the problem-solving process)

Options – The third step is overcoming obstacles. There are obstacles to achieving the goal. Write down the obstacles and search for options that will help overcome the obstacles. (collaborate with the mentee and provide guidance on how to overcome obstacles)

Wrap Up or Way Forward – The last step is the action plan. This is the process of creating a specific action plan to reach the goal. Creating and writing a clear plan:

  • Goal (s)
  • Time-line (with deadlines) of the steps to achieve the goal
  • Identify resources available or resources that are needed
  • Options to overcome obstacles

Now take action. Follow-up.

The model provides a structure how to manage and achieve goals. Working together and collaborating through the process will build mentor-mentee relationship.

Mind Tools is a valuable website for information to aid mentors with the GROW model, communication skills, time management, and organization skills. They also provide free app: Mind Tool App. The app is fun way to learn new skills or build on a current skill.
