The Coachella lineup 2013 edition will feature artists from multiple genres, with several stars from hip hop taking the stage this year. Last year's show was highlighted by the performance of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg featuring a lifelike hologram of Tupac Shakur. This year's show may be highlighted by an appearance from the late ODB of Wu-Tang Clan, or not.
The LA Times reported on the latest lineup on Friday, Jan. 25 which will include several popular bands from rock to pop to funk such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Yeah Yeah Yeah's, Blur, and Phoenix. However, when it comes to hip hop, the lineup has been called questionable compared to last year's edition. Don't tell that to the rappers mentioned for this year's show.
One of which is Action Bronson, who has slowly been rising in popularity as an underground star. Bronson has released several critically-acclaimed albums and mixtapes including the recent "Rare Chandeliers" along with The Alchemist. Bronson's recent appearance on A$AP Rocky's "1 Train," a posse cut, has further showcased his skills in hip hop. Ironically, another one of the guest rappers on that track, Danny Brown, will also appear at Coachella to showcase his talents.
In terms of legends, it's hard to beat the Wu-Tang Clan, straight out of Shaolin. The early rumor is that all of the surviving members of the group will appear at the show, until further news says otherwise. Whether or not they go with the whole ODB hologram concept is another question. However, fans will surely welcome the Wu back with open arms waving in the air for their Shaolin style.
Another popular group, Jurassic 5 from the west coast, will also appear at this year's show. The group had been a throwback to old school hip hop in terms of their beats and the way they threw rhymes back and forth among their group members. They had smash hits with "Quality Control" and "W.O.E. is Me (World of Entertainment)," as well as the popular song, "What's Golden." Jurassic broke up in 2007, making this particular reunion an exciting one for longtime fans.
Don't forget about 2 Chainz, who has achieved his share of popularity with his debut album "Based on a T.R.U. Story" in 2012, and his appearances on guest tracks for Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Big K.R.I.T., and A$AP Rocky. He may not be everyone's favorite hip hop star, but he's certainly getting his recognition from a segment of fans. He'll be among the headline rap acts for this year's concert lineup.
Last year's show featured the likes of Childish Gambino, A$AP Rocky, Kendrick Lamar and Radiohead. However, there were also big surprise appearance from Eminem, Tony Yayo, 50 Cent, Rihanna, Usher and Wiz Khalifa. This year's edition of Coachella in 2013 will need to bring a lot more to the table as having 2 Chainz on the bill my not generate tons of excitement for hip hip fans. Luckily, Wu-Tang Clan, Jurassic 5 and Action Bronson should help sell a few tickets.
