Coachella 2013 has just been announced: who's in, who's out, and who's back

January 24, 2013: There are quite a few surprises in store for Coachella 2013 as well as a few unsurprising returns. Coachella repeat offenders include Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blur, Vampire Weekend, Grizzly Bear, Beach House, La Roux, Phoenix, Yeasayer, Passion Pit are all back. As usual there are quite a few acts from way back including OMD, New Order, Social Distortion, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Dinosaur Jr., the Selector, Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine, and Johnny Marr.

Surprises include Janelle Monae in small print, Violent Femmes who had a nasty breakup in 2009 over Wendy's commercials, and that there don't seem to be many Spanish language bands in the mix. Just Cafe Tacuba? That's a crying shame. It's also not exactly Rapacella as it has been at times, however, Majer Lazer, Theophilus London, and Janelle Monae will certainly help mix things up.

Many are thrilled to see Blur back so soon. The Postal Service being back in action after 10 years sends chills up people's spines. A few LA bands which have been covered here will be there, including White Arrows.

Who's out? There was speculation about the Smiths reuniting. Please cue Taylor Swift's "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" as there is only Johnny Marr. Names were tossed about, including the Rolling Stones. It's plain to see who is in by the announcement which comes straight from Goldenvoice.

The weekends have been announced as follows:

Weekend 1: April 12th-14th, 2013

Weekend 2: April 19th-21st, 2013

Festival passes for both weekends go on sale Tuesday, January 29th at 10 AM PST. There are quite a few new conditions. Festival passes for Weekend 1 must be purchased with a shuttle pass or a car camping pass. New for 2013, the price you see is the price you pay — prices reflect all fees included. Layaway is no longer an option for either weekend.
