One player had ten points in a weekend series and helped her team sweep North Dakota, while one player had four goals over the weekend to help her team sweep St. Cloud State. Sounds about even, right? Well, the WCHA thought so in naming Amanda Kessel and Jamie Kenyon Co-Offensive Players of the Week. At least they got the offensive part right. Not to take anything away from Kenyon, but the two players had very different weekends.
Kessel's six goals and four assists were part of a Gopher line that helped sweep North Dakota, a team the Gophers had not swept since 2009. Kessel is already closing in on 200 career points, with 194 her current total.
Bemidji State defenseman Erika Wheelhouse was named Defensive Player of the Week after getting her first goal of the season and helping Bemidji State get a shutout win over Minnesota State last weekend. She beat out the Gophers Rachel Ramsey and the Badgers Alex Rigsby for the honor.
Wisconsin's Courtney Burke was named Rookie of the Week with her three assist performance last weekend against Ohio State. She helped the Badgers get a big sweep over the Buckeyes, who now have a four game winning streak. She beat out Minnesota's Hannah Brandt and UND's Meghan Dufault for the honor.
Here is the press release.
