CNY junior just misses Westminster win; Pekingese takes Best in Show

Central New York's lone junior showmanship representative in the Westminster Kennel Club (WKC) Tuesday competition, Lizzy Brate and her black and white Pointer Chandler (Ch Alydar Twice The Love), didn't place in her preliminary class on Tuesday afternoon. That meant that Brate and Chandler unfortunately weren't one of the eight teams who moved ahead into Tuesday night's 2012 WKC junior showmanship finals.

Junior Ania Kelley, who showed English Cocker Wizard (Ch. Winfree's Do You Believe in Magic), took home the Westminster Kennel Club Best Junior Handler ribbon and the $6000 scholarship in last night's 7:30 p.m. competition. In all, WKC offers $20,000 in college scholarship prize money to the eight junior showmanship finalists, who each take home a scholarship ranging from $500 (for placing 5th through 8th) to $6000 - $3000 (for 1st - 4th).

According to the rules for 2013's WKC Junior Showmanship competition, Brate can earn one final invitation to the 2013 show with “Best Junior Handler [wins] (with competition) at seven or more AKC Licensed or Member shows held between November 1, 2011 and October 31, 2012 (inclusive), and who [are] at least 9 years old and under 18 years old at the time of each qualifying win.” Since Brate will turn 18 in April, 2012, she must earn her seven Best Junior ribbons before her 18th birthday this year to qualify for 2013's Westiminster Kennel Club junior classes.

According to mom Pat Stevens-Brate, Lizzy is already on her way to racking up those wins. Lizzy is also already close to qualifying for this December's 2012 AKC/Eukanuba National Championship Junior Showmanship competition. To qualify for AKC/Eukanuba classes, juniors must earn five Best Junior ribbons, in compettion, and have a grade point average of 3.0 or better.
