CNN's Piers Morgan on Bloomberg's soda ban: 'People need the nanny state'

On Monday, CNN's Piers Morgan defended Mayor Michael Bloomberg's ban on large sugary drinks, saying that "people need the nanny state," especially on issues like smoking, alcohol, food and soda consumption, Newsbusters reported.

"I think people need the nanny state occasionally, particularly on issues like smoking, drinking, guzzling sodas too big for them, you know, eating 16 Big Macs a day," he told New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn.

Morgan also compared diets to "a form of nanny state."

Matt Hadro said that Morgan took a swipe at former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, who celebrated Monday's ruling overturning the ban with a tweet.

"Government, stay out of my refrigerator!" she tweeted.

"The mind only boggles what's in her refrigerator," Morgan said.

Morgan expressed support for Bloomberg's ban that was set to begin on Tuesday.

"And what's the point of being a mayor of a city like New York? He's been big on gun control, big on smoking – he wants New Yorkers to be fitter and healthier. What is wrong with that?"

While there is nothing wrong with wanting people healthy, New York Supreme Court Justice Milton Tingling ruled that Bloomberg's ban was "arbitrary and capricious."

The judge also said that Bloomberg overstepped his authority by bringing the ban before a board he appointed.

While the judge's ruling did not sit well with media personalities like Piers Morgan and MSNBC's Mika Brzezinski, who exploded with anger on Tuesday's "Morning Joe," it was hailed by a lage number of people on both sides of the political aisle.
