CNN reportedly fires Soledad O'Brien and replaces her with Erin Burnett

CNN is reportedly removing Soledad O'Brien from her morning news spot on "Starting Point" and replacing her with Erin Burnett, according to the UPI Blog on Feb. 21. Rumors have been circulating since Jeff Zucker took over the reins at CNN and began making changes, but this news probably came as somewhat of a shock to O’Brien. She had worked with Zucker previously at NBC.

Mediacoder.com puts a very positive spin on the arrangement in an article today, quoting O'Brien

After Mr. Zucker took over, “we had conversations in general about my role at CNN,” Ms. O’Brien said in a telephone interview on Thursday. “What we ended up with was, they wanted to partner with me, and I wanted to partner with them.”

Soledad O’Brien is known for her hard-hitting and controversial news stories and documentaries. Erin Burnett’s perky on-air presence more resembles Katie Couric, so this could be a statement on where the network wants to go with its morning news programming.

Soledad O’Brien will be doing freelance work on documentaries that she will provide to CNN and other media outlets. She does not have an exclusive arrangement with CNN.

Some people are annoyed by Erin Burnett’s fast and rambling speech. While she has a pleasing appearance and nice command of the material, she does not appear to be a seasoned journalist.
