The 2013 CMJ Music Marathon starts its five day takeover of NYC tomorrow, October 15.
For the last 30 years, the CMJ Music Marathon has been bringing a diverse group of musicians to New York City for five days of non-stop music and discovery. Through hundreds of showcases and panels, the Marathon has become one of the most influential festivals for learning and discovering the next big thing in the music industry. From October 15 through October 19, more than 1,400 live performances will take place in over 80 of New York City’s greatest nightclubs and theaters.
Some of this year’s personal highlights include NGHBRS, Brand of Julez, The Bottom Dollars, Satellite, Sheppard, Bridge City Hustle, Lily & the Parlour Tricks, The Sway Machinery, Chevonne and the Fuzz, and many, many more.
Besides showcases, the CMJ Festival provides thought-provoking panels navigating the current state of the music industry. This year’s topics include “The New Age of Independent Labels,” “The Reign of the Music Video,” “The Return of Vinyl,” “iTunes: A Decade Later,” “Royalties in the Digital World,” “Recycled Sounds: Our Nostalgic Future,” “D.I.Y. Theory and Application,” and more, as well as College Day festivities and the entertainment law seminars. There will also be morning yoga sessions for a little bit of zen amidst the chaos of the festival. All panels take place at NYU’s Kimmel Center in the heart of Washington Square.
In addition to the music and panels, there will also be a special early screening of “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” on October 16 with RSVP.
Returning for another year, KEXP radio will be broadcasting live from Judson Memorial Church with performances from The Dismemberment Plan, Au Revoir Simone, The Helio Sequence and more. The broadcasts will run from October 16 to October 18.
