CM Punk announces his WWE departure, Shares more details about the decision

On last night's episode of Monday Night RAW, WWE superstar CM Punk won the #1 contender's match by defeating both Alberto Del Rio and Rey Mysterio Jr. Punk will now face John Cena for the WWE championship on July 17th in the main event of WWE's "Money in the Bank" PPV. However, the big shock of the night was Punk announcing that he will be leaving the WWE on July 18th, the day after the PPV. On late Monday night, CM Punk shared more details about his decision to leave as he made the following comments via his Twitter page:

"I knew I was gone at the beginning of the year," Punk wrote. "I just woke up one day and I knew. That's the way I work a lot of the time. I think it's creepy too, but it's really helpful. I knew I'd be history by July. Come say goodbye on July 17th. Come say goodbye on July 17th. I promise to go out with a bang. Trust me. XxX"

For the last few months there have been many reports and speculations over Punk's status ever since word of his contractual difficulties first leaked out. Many wrestling pundits and fans wondered why the WWE would let go of one of their top superstars. Punk's comments from last night make it clear that he was the one who wanted to leave and the decision was made 6 months ago, not 3 months ago when reports first broke.

It's interesting that the WWE is making this into a storyline as Punk's contractual status has been a touchy subject within the WWE for a while now. However, it will make for compelling TV as they get closer to the PPV. Since it is a storyline, there's always room for things to change with Punk's status. Unfortunately for CM Punk fans, I don't see this happening. But as they say in this business, "never say never".

Last month, multiple sources stated that Punk's contract didn't end until September. Which means that he could be taken off TV in July to prevent any complications down the road as the WWE is paranoid about wrestlers leaving the company and damaging the WWE on the way out the doors. Whatever the case may be, Punk's departure is a huge blow to the WWE roster as he is easily one of their best all-around performers inside and outside of the ring.
