Clutch free throw shooting gives Lynx quarterfinal victory over Narraguagus

BANGOR--- Teams win or lose because of free throw shooting all the time.

On Wednesday morning, the Mattanawcook Lynx girls basketball team won because of free throw shooting.

The Lynx shot 28-33 from the line for the game, including 12-16 in the fourth quarter as they defeated the Narraguagus Knights 46-40 in a Maine Principals' Association class C quarterfinal game at Cross Insurance Center.

The 28 free throws broke a single game record for a class C girls tournament game. The previous record was set by Searsport in 1980.

Freshman Sydney Robertson scored all seven of her points in the fourth quarter.

Robertson went 5-6 from the line. She also pulled down six rebounds.

Kendra Thurlow led the Lynx with 14 points and eight rebounds.

The sixth seeded Lynx led from early in the first quarter until Anna Ramsay gave the Knights a 37-36 lead when she made two free throws with 4:18 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Cheyanne Libby made one free throw to even the score at 37.

Robertson made four consecutive free throws to give the Lynx a 41-37 lead.

Carly McDonald scored eight points for the Lynx. Libby added six points and three rebounds. Courtney Gordon chipped in with five points and two rebounds.

Mattanawcook (11-9) will play a semifinal game against PCHS or Orono on Friday at 8:35 p.m.

Ramsay led the Knights with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and three assists. Kelli Kennedy added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Narraguagus finishes the season with a record of 15-4.
