The North American Club Nintendo awards were released today and unlike in previous years, there will be no physical gifts available for Elite Status members.

This year, Club Nintendo has decided to go down the route of offering download codes for Nintendo games new and old. There are different games available for Platinum and Gold members, though Platinum users are also allowed to download the Gold options.

The following games are available for those that reached the Platinum and Gold levels. Each member is allowed just one free download, whether they reached Platinum or not. As previously stated, Platinum members are allowed to choose a game from either list.

Platinum Award

  • Game and Wario – Wii U
  • NES Remix – Wii U
  • EarthBound – Wii U
  • Dr. Luigi – Wii U
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D – 3DS
  • Fluidity: Spin Cycle – 3DS
  • Dillon’s Rolling Western – 3DS
  • Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move – 3DS

Gold Award

  • Kid Icarus – Wii U
  • Super Mario Bros. – Wii U
  • Zelda II: The Adventure of Link – Wii U
  • Donkey Kong 3 – 3DS
  • Wario Land 2 – 3DS
  • Metroid – 3DS
  • Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins – 3DS
  • Ice Climber

There's no hiding the fact that some fans are pretty disappointed in the awards this year. Club Nintendo has sent out some pretty cool stuff in the past such as albums featuring music from their games as well as cool Mario merchandise such as a pin set.

It would also be a little bit less frustrating if it wasn't for the fact that the awards offered year-round are pretty bland themselves. As of right now the only things available are a couple of greeting cards and some other relatively uninteresting items. No shirts, no statues....not really anything worth spending your coins on.

While there is certainly nothing wrong with getting a free game, it does kill a little bit of the hype that comes with actually getting a physical gift. With that said, as someone who has never played the highly praised EarthBound, I think it's time to give that game a shot.

If you do have a Club Nintendo account, be sure to check and see if you reached the Platinum or Gold levels. You only have till August 15 to claim your game.
