‘Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2’ stormed to the top of the domestic weekend box office, according to industry figures released Monday.
The animated sequel held off a trio of other newcomers and earned $34 million, nearly $4 million more than the first film earned on its opening weekend in 2009.
Last week’s No. 1 movie, kidnapping thriller ‘Prisoners’ starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, slipped to second, earning $10.8 million for a total of $38.5 million since opening Sept. 20.
Formula One racing drama ‘Rush’ debuted at No. 3, earning $10 million.
Romantic comedy ‘Baggage Claim’ opened at No. 4 with $9 million.
‘Don Jon’ starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Scarlett Johansson debuted at No. 5 with $8.6 million.
