Cloudy and cool conditions covered the Tampa Bay (Fla.) area throughout the day on Friday, Jan. 4. Forecasters had been unsure earlier in the week exactly how far south the frontal boundary that pushed through west-central Florida on Thursday would drift before becoming stationary across the peninsula.
Because the front stalled well to the south of Tampa Bay, in the vicinity of Fort Myers and Naples (Fla.), temperatures and rain coverage remained lower than originally forecast for the area. Highs across the area on Friday included 60 degrees in Clearwater, 61 degrees in Tampa, 62 degrees at MacDill Air Force Base (AFB), and 63 degrees in St. Petersburg.
Although Friday overall was drier than expected in regards to the coverage of precipitation, each of the reporting stations around Tampa Bay recorded measurable precipitation between midnight and 5 p.m. on Friday. Rainfall totals included 0.05 inches in St. Petersburg, 0.11 inches in Tampa, 0.14 inches in Clearwater, and 0.23 inches at MacDill AFB.
Rather wet weather expected for the weekend
The entire weekend will not be a washout around Tampa Bay, but chances are fairly high most areas will receive at least some rainfall on Saturday and/or Sunday. While rain seems rather likely, the threat of thunderstorm development should remain low both days. Precipitation coverage will average between 30 and 40 percent on Saturday, and rise to around 70 percent by Sunday.
Skies will be mostly cloudy to cloudy both Saturday and Sunday across west-central Florida. Morning lows on Saturday will range from 52 to 60 degrees, and will rise to between 55 and 65 degrees by Sunday morning. Highs on Saturday will reach between 67 and 77 degrees, and will rise to between 70 and 80 degrees on Sunday.
Drier weather to kick off the work week
A drier weather pattern will establish itself across west-central Florida by the beginning of the work week. Nevertheless, a few showers cannot be completely eliminated from the forecast for either Monday or Tuesday.
Overall precipitation coverage for both days will range from 20 to 30 percent. After lows each morning ranging from 52 to 62 degrees, highs will climb to between 70 and 80 degrees both afternoons under partly cloudy to partly sunny skies.
