“Hello” by Cloudkicker is a ten minute long Ambient / Noise single.
Cloudkicker is actually musician Ben Sharp, who uses a computer to record and sequence instruments, which is not an unusual music making process, but can sound quite unique through Sharps filter.
Instruments don't quite sound like instruments in this piece. Sharp seems to pluck elements out of their sound out and play with them, throwing them into a mechanical type of spinning progression. Sounds repeat and fade, grow and are added to.
The effect of the sound on the listener is a very hypnotic one... the music seems to create a trance that comes and goes incredibly fast... leaving the listener to wonder where exactly those 10 minutes just went.
I don't fully understand the science behind computer sequencing in music, and I think that's a good ignorance to have going into a listen of a piece like this. There's no reservations or critique that can really be given by me, it's just a very otherworldly sounding song... different... and I like different.
