Los Angeles - This early evening I stopped by Downey Billiards, in Downey, California, to ask a few of the sports fans lounging around and shooting pool about the Saturday night battle between Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey.

The most common response from the patrons was, "who is Joshua Clottey," and "I am not planning on buying the pay per view."
This tiny, non-scientific sample does not validate my prediction that Pacquiao and Clottey will garner less than 1,000,000 pay per view buys, but it does provide some ancillary evidence - at best.
Now some of you readers might wonder, "Why is Lois harping on the pay per view numbers for Joshua Clottey and Manny Pacquiao? Is it another back handed attempt to insult Pacquiao?"
Rest assured my boxing loving friends, this is no attack on Pacquiao - the best pound for pound boxer in the world today - but is merely a well educated look into future negotiations between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Junior.

Remember, the fight we all really wanted to see? The Destroyer vs. Money? The fight which seemed so close to being signed just three months ago, a true fight for the ages.
While Pacquiao was preparing for his bout with Clottey at the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, California, just a few miles away in Downtown, Golden Boy Promotions was busy arranging for a May 1 fight between Mayweather and Southern California product Shane Mosley.
Last week at a press conference for Mosley-Mayweather, Golden Boy shot caller Richard Schaefer predicted that the fight would clock in 3,000,000 pay per view buys.
In my estimation, Mr. Schaefer may be exaggerating by about 1,500,000 buys, but I do expect Mosley vs. Mayweather to out sell Pacquiao vs. Clottey. The combined star power of Mayweather and Mosley out do Pacquiao's in a bout with a virtually unknown, but solid welterweight Clottey.
Don't believe me, believe my small sample of fans at Downey Billiards, who all recognized, knew about, and were willing to purchase the Mosley - Mayweather event.
Let us project into the future.
It is mid-May and boxing fans are burning hot to see Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather. Pacquiao took a solid decision from Clottey in March and Floyd is coming off a hard earned, but clear decision against Mosley.
The pay per view numbers in my scenario have Pacquiao selling 800,000 against Clottey and Floyd bringing in 1,250,000 million with Mosley.
Back in early January, the contract stipulation that kept Mayweather and Pacquiao was the timing of an Olympic-style drug test requested by Mayweather. That one little sticking point, no pun intended, kept us all from seeing Mayweather - Pacquiao four days from today.
There were no arguments about a 50-50 purse split between both high-level stars, the only fly in the ointment was the test.
The second time around in my negotiation scenario, the drug testing will be an issue, but the purse split will also become an issue.
While a 50-50 split might have seemed fair back in December for Team Mayweather, it might not seem so logical if Mayweather out sells Pacquiao in pay per views following his bout with Mosley.
During the initial negotiations this winter, Pacquiao was coming off of a 1,250,000 buys in a bout with Miguel Cotto and Mayweather had recently sold slightly over 1,000,000 buys.
If Mayweather was willing to go 50-50 when he was on the short end of the drawing power measuring stick, what will his demands be when he sits on top of the pay per view sales hill?
A tough, knock 'em down, drag 'em negotiations.
Joshua Clottey, due to his lack of recognition, might become the man who sunk the Mayweather - Pacquiao fight from ever happening.

Clottey is a tall order fight for Pacquiao, literaly. He's got good defense with long arms to shield his face and his body. It will be a miracle if Pac lands a good punch in the brick wall defenses of Clottey.

Pac has already said about winner-take-all against Money. No probs with the sharing here, 50-50 or whatever. Pac even said he won't take payments, just the winner bringing all of the money. Now, one has to be very brave to accept that challenge. With the hard-to-settle sharing disputes, i believe the this challenge from Pac is the real deal! No more negotiation needed, just fight, win, and take 'em all money!
Dictating conditions is Mayweather's forte.
Mayweather's campaign against drugs only cover boxing. Why not go universally against the use of drugs! Because his uncles and aunts and cousins and what not might get involved, that's why. Only against Pacquiao because the scoop of the gossip originated from a distinguished American drug convict Mayweather Sr. & whatever he says the columnists believe.
Forget Mayweather. The name itself doesn't conjure the image of a fighter.
Don't worry Ricardo, Floyd will not go to the next level as I don't see him winning against Solid Shane. I don't care whether he will get 3M PPV because at the end of the day, he will loose to Shane so what's the point of having large PPV when this going to be his last time in the PPV air. Even if Pacquiao don't fight Mayweather at all, he has achieved more than what Mayweather did. Pacquiao doesn't anymore need to fight Mayweather. Pacquiao is already the best of his generation. He is the best fighter of hte decade. Mayweather fight will only be an icing on the cake for Pacquiao.

This writer is biased! Why is the current world Champ being blamed for the botched Pacman-Mayweather Fight? Olympic-style drug testing is not part of NSC rules. So why harp on an extra-arbitrary imposition by a fighter like KFC as the reason for the cancellation of a fight. But despite it being not a requirement, blood testing was accepted by Pacman up to a certain period before the actual rumble inside the ring. The real question shd be: WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE IN ARRIVING AT A CONCLUSIVE RESULT WHEN "BLOOD SAMPLES TAKEN 24 DAYS BEFORE THE FIGHT PLUS A SAMPLE TAKEN MINUTES AFTER THE FIGHT IS COMPARED TO BLOOD SAMPLES TAKEN UP 14 DAYS BEFORE THE FIGHT. The obvious answer is NIL. But new insights surfaced after lots of pros and cons were presented ONLY LATELY when new purported findings about drug testing using blood samples. As to the PPV war between Mosley-Mayweather and Pacman-Clottey fight, obviously the former bout will outdo the latter SIMPLY BECAUSE OF TIME ELEMENT.

After the Clottey fight, Mayweather will be more scared of the Pacman and purse split is just a convenient excuse. Anyway, Pacquiao doesn't need a No. 2 Mayweather. He has made his legacy while Floyd's legacy of being ducking chicken will forever haunt him.
floyd will outsell pacman in ppv because floyd has mosely...the #3 p4p figter as a dance partner, and it helps they are both americans. pacman has a dangerous but obscure african opponent in clottey. so this makes them foreigners at a time when the americans are thirsting for a popular WW champion of their own.
pacman/cotto made more ppv than floyd/jmm, and pacman is the most prestigious champion while floyd has nothing but his dirty mouth. yet pacman allowed him 50/50 sharing for the sake of the fans and the chance to beat him up.

Whatever happens, Pacman-Mayweather is not gonna happen, period. If Mayweather wins versus Mosley, his demands for a Pacquiao fight will be much crazier than ever. If Mayweather loses to Mosley (which I hope he will) then there's no reason for Pacman to fight Mayweather, Pacman will fight Mosley, which will be much easier to fix and I think will also be a much better fight. In any case, Pacman does not need Mayweather. Pacquiao can always fight Mosley, win or lose versus Mayweather, which will be a better fight that's bound to happen. Or he can go after Cotto should he beat Yuri Foreman for the WBC Super Welterweight belt and a chance for an 8th title in as many weight class.
I don't give a rats a s s who makes the most PPV fights between Pac/Cottey and Floyd/Moseley. There is no way in hell Manny is getting lower than %50. He will not agree to that. When Gayfeather-Mosley outsells Pac-Clot (which any objective observer can see, both being American), Gayfeather would have another card up his sleeve to make the negotiations a living hell for all concerned. Sure, Floyd vs. Mosley will outsell Manny vs. Clottey, but the reason for that is not only Floyd, but Mosley AND Floyd. Floyd has no leverage to demand a bigger split, if ever he musters the guts to fight Manny, regardless of the PPV numbers of their upcoming fights. If Floyd were fighting Clottey and Manny were fighting Mosley, Manny vs. Mosley would also be selling more, because he has the "bigger" dance partner. 50-50 split remains fair. If Manny gives way relative to the drug testing issue, but the fight is still not made because this time Floyd is demanding a bigger share, then Floyd would never get sympathy from the fans, ever. There are more than 300M Americans. Half of it does not even comprise Filipinos and Ghanians combined. An estimated 1,250,000 PPV buys for Mayweather and Mosley is not considered significant compared to 800,000 PPV buys for Pacquiao-Clottey. Why? One-half of 1,250,000 is 625,000. 175,000 lesser PPV than that of Pacquiao-Clottey.

Compairing the results of ppv between pac/clotey and floyed/ mosley is a very big damned idea. First of all floyed and mosley are two americans while pac/clotey are strangers in america and comes from a third world country as well as clotey is not a popular boxer compared to mosley. So for me it is again one of the strategy of floyed to duck pacman because he will demand bigger share (as he had already said) if their ppv results exceeded that of pac/clotey fight. but what will happen if opposite results comes in. is floyed willing to settle a lesser share? hahaha.....

I believe you RL! I'm one of Pacquiao's million fans! I do think Pacquiao-Mosley will have lesser PPV buys than Mayweather-Mosley. I still think Pacquiao suffers race-discrimination from average Americans. But if we talk about the number of gate-attendance in Dallas, I don't believe Mayweather can ever surpass Pacquiao's live gate-attendance of fans who want to see him perform "live" and not just on cable TV.
