Despite an unusual dry season that lasted through February, Lake Tahoe ski resorts benefitted from a series of March snowstorms that will extend the season for many.
Sierra-at-Tahoe ski resort will be open through April 22 with full mountain operations in effect for skiing and snowboarding. Late-season storms brought 140 inches of snow in March to Sierra.
Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows, which are owned jointly, announced they will both stay open through April, conditions permitting. Both Squaw and Alpine, which are within a few miles of each other off Highway 89 in Truckee, are scheduled to remain open daily for skiing and riding through April 29.
In addition, Alpine ski resort is also slated to stay open Friday through Sunday until May 13.
Kirkwood and Heavenly ski resorts announced that they would remain open until April 15, but will expand the season to include the last two weekends in April. Kirkwood has no set closing date right now. Both resorts are owned by Vail Resorts.
Both Sugar Bowl and Homewood ski resorts announced late last week that they will extend closing dates for the 2011-12 skiing and snowboarding season.
Sugar Bowl ski resort says it has received over 200 inches of snowfall in March. The improving conditions was a major factor in extending the season Sugar Bowl will continue to run on-mountain and base-area operations on a daily basis through April 29.
Also citing the large March snow totals, Homewood ski resort will reopen after today (April 8) for the weekend of April 13-15, giving skiers and riders and extra weekend on the mountain.
