Close call: Idol judges save Florida's "Big Mike" Lynche from being voted off last night

It was a shocking turn of events for St. Petersburg's "Big Mike" Lynche last night on American Idol, when he not only ended up in the bottom three for the first time, but was revealed as the singer with the least amount of votes--and the one going home this week.

Fortunately for Mike, his outstanding performance at the end of the show convinced the judges to use their one "save" this season, and he'll be returning next week to perform again.

Mike was in the bottom three along with Aaron Kelly and Andrew Garcia--who definitely deserved to be there--but Mike had one of the better performances on Tuesday night, and I was shocked to see him in that group. I had guessed that either Aaron or Andrew would be going home this week--neither one has been doing anything memorable. Although Aaron has a wonderful voice, he lacks the experience and seems to do the same thing week after week (sappy ballods). Andrew doesn't have quite the chops, but has that "nice-guy" charm, which I suspect is what's carrying him through.

So because the judges saved Mike, that means two contestants will be voted off next week.  Good call on their part--America got that one wrong, in my opinion.

Is anyone else out there finding this Season quite vanilla? Aside from Crystal Bowersox, Big Mike and occasionally Siobhan Magnus, there's nothing really that exciting happening--but really, how can anyone top last season's Adam Lambert?

Speaking of Adam, he'll be mentoring the Idol hopefuls next Tuesday night, and performing on Wednesday night. Now that will certainly spice things up for American Idol--and I'm betting will bump those ratings right on up.

What did you think of Big Mike being voted off...and then saved? Did America make the right call? Did the judges? Would love to hear what you think!

I like Big Mike well enough, but I wish the judges didn't have to waste their one save on him. Hopefully they won't lose Casey over this! He's my favorite of all this season (plus he's gorgeous!) and I hope he makes it far.

I am not a big Mike fan and I do not think they should of used the save on him....My favorite is Casey and I am getting to liking Tim since his last song which was good.....Yes, america did not make the right decision, and the judges didn't... Most of it was Kara a.k.a. trying to be Paula....and Ellen.........
