On the eve of Valentine's Day Caron Butler and his wife Andrea are unafraid to demonstrate the alternative to the depiction of NBA couple life in "Basketball Wives."
The Clippers forward is back in Los Angeles for the second time in his career, having played with the Lakers after his 2004 trade from Miami as part of the Shaq transaction.
He’s stopped two other places along the way and Butler says a couple needs to be of one mind on how to handle the changes. Two of the biggest issues that puts stress on marriage is distance as well as repeated relocation.
“When you are an NBA family you know it, a trade, might happen and you just deal with it. Our mindset is very similar so when I signed with the Clippers, we were both ready to go."
Andrea’s comment on the subject proves Caron’s point:
“When he signed with the Clippers at first I was happy because the weather is great. Then I was devastated. I had just had a baby 3 weeks earlier and was not in a position to pick up and move so soon. I originally planned to stay behind. But we had never been apart for long, so we decided that I staying behind was out of the question.”
The Butlers have three little girls seven year old Mia, 19-month old Ava and newborn Gia who make Caron’s Valentine’s Day eventful. "They are all my Valentines," said Butler. "My heart, my loves, my life."
What are Andrea and Caron planning for the big day?
Andrea: “I try to get the kids more involved. For example one year we made a scrapbook of all his highlights since college. He loved it! I still catch him looking through it every summer when we go home.”
As for Caron, well he has five tips for men when it comes to having a happy Valentine’s Day.
Take Her To The Spa: It is a relaxing way to enjoy the day together, and you know she'll love it.
2. A Romantic Dinner: You probably should have reservations at a restaurant by now. If you don't, then think about staying in and cooking for her. She'll be impressed.
3. Roses: Do not mess that up. A must on Valentine's Day.
4. Jewelry: All women love jewelry. Need I say more?
5. Take her to a play: It will show your sensitive side and is sure to score you some points.
6. Bonus-Romantic getaway: Instead of going home that evening, take her to spend the night at a bed and breakfast or hotel.
Take it from a man who married his college sweetheart and ten years later is open about his love for her.
