Prominent Republican supporter Clint Eastwood has signed a court brief urging the US Supreme Court to support gay marriage, Friday’s Los Angeles Times reports.
On Thursday, the Obama administration urged the high court to strike down Proposition 8, California’s antigay marriage initiative.
In a statement US Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. wrote: "Throughout history, we have seen the unjust consequences of decisions and policies rooted in discrimination," he said. "The issues before the Supreme Court are not just important to the tens of thousands of Americans who are being denied equal benefits and rights under our laws, but to our nation as a whole."
More than 80 Republicans joined Clint Eastwood in his support for gay marriage by signing on to a “friend of the court” brief. Other supporters include former Palm Springs Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack and HP CEO and former California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman.
A new Field Poll found that the majority of California residents aer with Clint Eastwood on gay marriage.
Support for gay marriage is 61% to 32%. By contrast, in 1977 only 28% approved of gay marriage.
