Clint Eastwood, and a group of other Republicans, filed a brief in support of marriage equality for gay men and gay women in the state of California. Good.
Mr. Eastwood has always been a libertarian Republican, not beholden to the superstitions and dogma of the Republican religious right-wing. Eastwood isn't a young man, but like many older men, he is coming to support marriage equality.
There is a myth that people get more socially conservative as they get older, actually they don't. They just get more conservative in relation to the larger culture.
A poll in California showed 48% of those 65 and older support same sex marriage, how many of those men and women 40 years ago as (much younger men and women) would have answered yes? Probably very few.
As astounding 78% of those under 40 in Califonia according to the same poll supported marriage equality. In fact, 64% of African Americans and 56% of Latinos support marriage equality, in response to those who say that these groups are opposed to it.
In the nation as a whole, 51% of Republicans supported some form of legal right (be it marriage or civil unions) for gay couples. It is only a matter of time before the GOP puts something in their presidential platform, supporting at least civil unions.
Now, I wish President Obama had come out further and issued a brief in support of striking down all bans on marriage equality. It does not make any sense that the ban in California is unconstitutional just because gays had a small window to marry. If a ban is unconstitutional it is unconstitutional in every state. Come on President Obama, keep evolving!
