Michigan's Lower Peninsula is not known for its climbing. And for good reason: there is not a lot to climb here. Climbers who live here have three options 1. Grand Ledge. 2. Gym climbing. 3. Road Trip! Today we will talk about Grand Ledge.
Grand Ledge is just what its name implies, 30 foot natural ledges made of sandstone in Grand Ledge, Michigan, located in Oak Park. The rock is too soft to lead climb and can only be top-roped; climbers are also not allowed to rappel, down-climb or be lowered at the end of a climb. The vertical grades range from 5.4 to 5.13. There are also bouldering problems ranging from V0-V7.
Climbers who want to top-rope must bring their own rope. Many climbers set up a few top-ropes and leave them up for other climbers to use. It is climbers' etiquette to ask first, and to reciprocate. This is to save time and wear on the fragile ledges. Climbers also need to place a piece of cloth (a shirt works fine) or a carpet square under their top anchor so the webbing doesn't further erode the ledge.
Oak Park features a drinking fountain and a port-a-potty for your convenience.
