At approximately 12 PM this afternoon, a highly respected and experienced 18-year-old climber from Highlands Ranch, CO fell up to 200 yards in the "hourglass" of Little Bear Peak and subsequently died from injuries. The hourglass is a steep gully that is used to climb the peak, and is often full of very loose rocks or ice, depending upon the season. A rescue operation is underway by Alamosa County Search and Rescue (SAR). A team has left to recover the climber and a helicopter was dispatched. It has been reported and confirmed that the helicopter crashed at 6:05 PM.

Little Bear Peak is one of the most dangerous 14'ers in Colorado, with many confirmed accidents and deaths in recent years.

The climbing community is rallying their positive thoughts while this rescue operation is underway.

Colorado Springs Hiking Examiner will continue to monitor this story as information is released. Please direct your thoughts and positive vibes towards Little Bear Peak while this rescue operation unfolds.

Late Tuesday night, KRDO News 13 reported the hiker's name is Kevin Hayne and that he passed away.

As a fellow hiker and 14er climber, this news saddens me greatly. My thoughts go out to family and friends during this very difficult time. Rest in peace, Kevin.
