Climb to Glory: The Legend of the 10th Mountain Division was produced by Colorado Ski and Snowboard Museum in partnership with Warren Miller Entertainment. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Chris Anthony Youth Initiative Project.
Climb to Glory: The Legend of the 10th Mountain Division is a film by Warren Miller Entertainment depicting the story of the infamous 10th Mountain Division who have a history in Colorado at Camp Hale, in Eagle Park east of Highway 34 between Leadville and Red Cliff Colorado.
These legendary soldiers trained at Camp Hale after its establishment in 1942 by the Army. At the camp the Soldiers of the Division, during World War II, learned all types of warfare along with how to survive in steep, rugged mountain areas, severe cold and heavy snow, which they eventually fought in when they were deployed to combat regions in the mountains of Italy.
When the mountain division was established in the early 1940’s the thought was the US needed a combat soldier who could fight in mountain areas world-wide such as; Finland who were a viable threat by Russia. The soldiers were recruited as part of the National Ski Patrol thinking it would be easier to make a fighting soldier out of a skier than it would be to make a soldier an excellent skier, which became the start of their history in the ski industry. This would and is the only time in US history a civilian sports organization would not only train, but recruit civilians to be soldiers. The Camp was named in honor of the former chief of the Colorado National Guard, General Irving Hale.
After their return from the war they were highly recommended candidates to fill the needed positions at the nations ski resorts, thus playing a vital part in the early days of the industry, especially in Colorado with Camp Hale residing near many of Colorado’s ski areas.
