Climate Cycle, a Chicago based non-profit organization, links bicycling and clean energy by raising money to fund solar panel installations on Chicago area schools. The program, which has initiated solar projects on 11 schools since 2009, aims to empower schools and youth to fight climate change while providing educational opportunities about renewable energy.
The program centers its fundraiser around the annual Ride to Recharge, which encourages individuals and teams to fundraise and ride in a 4, 10, 20, 62 or 125 mile bicycle route. In the first two years of the rides, 900 Climate Cyclists raised 175,000 to support solar installations and other environmental school projects.
This year’s event has a goal of 1,000 riders and raise $250,000 on the May 22nd Annual Ride to Recharge. Other upcoming events include Rider Rallies on April 14th and May 5th which will offer ride information, fundraising tips and general enthusiasm for the event.
