Clijsters defeats Wozniaki at Australian Open to reach the semifinals

Tuesday, January 24, in Melbourne at the 2012 Australian Open, Kim Clijsters was up against world number one Caroline Wozniaki of Denmark.  It was a case of Wozniaki the quintessential counter puncher versus the power stroking going for winners approach of the bomber from Belgium.

The first set was no contest as Clijsters powered her way to win at 6-3. At first the second set appeared to be some of the same. Clijsters jumped to a 5-2 lead. But Wozniaki stepped up her game. She got it to a tiebreak.

In the break the two battled point for point.  At 4-5, in favor of Clijsters with Wozniaki serving, a long rally ensued. It was the kind of point that would favor the counterpuncher, but Clijsters won the point. It was match point for the Belgium on her serve and that was all she needed. A hard serve and a weak return from the blond from Denmark that Clijsters blasted for a winner put the Belgium into the semifinals.

In that semifinals match, Clijsters will face Victoria Azarenka of Belarus who defeated Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, 6-7(0), 6-0, 6-2 in another quaterfinals contest earlier in the day.
